We all know THAT Jesus died. But we don't often talk about the reason why. What did we gain from Jesus death? What was accomplished in that moment? What difference does it make in my life? That is the focus for part 1 of Why Easter?

Every time we pray for a job, or to sell a house, or for the sale to go through or for a check in the mail we are inviting God to participate in our finances. Yet for many of us we exclude God from our finances through the decision to disobey his command to put his kingdom first. God says there is a way to open the door to his blessing and a way to close it. Which means we have a decision to make to invite the divine in our financial situation.

What drives out national obsession with debt? Discontentment. It is the feeling that what I have isn't good enough. What would happen if we trusted that God actually provided what we need when we need it? What if we trusted that he actually gave us all we need? What if we could actually be content with what we have been given?

Debt allows those without money to live like they have a lot. In the moment debt feels like freedom because I am free to buy what I can't actually afford. But that feeling of freedom doesn't last for long. Debt is bondage. It becomes our master and we are its servant. Which is why in this sermon we are lean in and listen as God calls us out of debt and into the freedom he has for us.

Most financial struggles are not about money. Many people who have lots of money have financial problems. Financial struggles result from misplaced understanding of how to mange the money we have. As christians the stakes are even higher when we begin to realize money we have bee given to manage is not our own.
